Otherkin is generally defined as "other than human" or "more
than just human" or something similar. MOST otherkin will admit to at least
being human in the flesh. Some feel that even physically they aren't human,
such as someone who claims to be physically of elven descent (although usually
these folks will be more likely to have *some* physical evidence to back up
their claims.)
Most otherkin, however, feel that their soul is nonhuman, even if they consider
themselves to be physically human. How do they know this? Usually through memories
from early childhood or past life memories. Sometimes, though, it's just a feeling,
something hard to explain. Similar to how most of us (people like me that is)
figure out we're vampires. :)
Note: Non-vampiric otherkin resource sites are particularly hard to find.
The reason, as explained to me, appears to be along these lines:
"...otherkin tend to be more private and introverted
people than vamps. We tend to keep to ourselves and advertise less about who
we are...."

THERIANS / WERECREATURES
Therianthrope ("Therian" for short) is a term (I doubt it's the
only one) sometimes used to describe were-creatures of various types. (Not all
were-creatures are werewolves by any means, and not all werecreatures refer
to themselves as therians.) It refers to being part animal and part human. While
most people would infer that means physical shapeshifting, it is not the case
with the vast majority of those that call themselves therianthropes.
Someone described this to me once as a concept similar to a native
american's or shaman's animal totems. I don't know if that applies to everyone
- I realize it may not - but it's probably the easiest way to explain that to
someone "not in the know".
WHAT ABOUT THE "WAR" BETWEEN
VAMPIRES AND WERECREATURES?
What war? Someone started a war and didn't break out the popcorn? *pouts*
Seriously, though, there is no war. Period. At least not that *I* know of, and
I've been around and active (off and on, but still active) in the realvamp community
since 1998, I would have heard *something* by now if there was. There is, however,
an obnoxious little git by the name of "werewolf tobias" who hates
vampires and who has sworn up and down that there's a "war" on, tells
everyone that "the only good vampire is a dead one", and drags his
opinion all over anyplace he can find to post. I believe he's been banned from
many message boards now for both the problems he's caused and for being a troll.
:)
This whole "war" concept most likely started with role-playing
games such as White Wolf's World of Darkness setting (Vampire: The Masquerade,
etc.).
