PSYCHIC/PSIONIC TERMS LIST
ASTRAL
One term for an "out of body experience", where the mind travels
outside the body. It is said the people often do this in their sleep, but
don't normally remember it. Some people are able to do this at will, others
cannot.

Other terms: Time manipulation, Time
Shifting, Phasing (Def. #2, below)
CENTER
Centering is a way to gain self-awareness and learning what parts of the
energy surrounding you is yours. This allows you to pay attention to your
personal energy center, sometimes called your spiritual center, and gather
all of your energy in one place instead of leaving it scattered all over.
This is an energy-based "pull yourself together" method. Think of
it like finding the most defensible room in the castle, the place where, once
you go there you can't be forced out.

CHI / KI
Terms meaning life energy. To my knowledge, "chi" is Chinese, and
"ki" is Japanese. See "psychic energy" below for further
explanation. See also "Prana" and "Psychic Energy".

CLAIRAUDIENCE
"Clear hearing" - the ability to "hear" things beyond
the range of normal hearing. This is sometimes used to include "messages
from beyond the grave".
Source: In common usage
CLAIRVOYANCE
"Clear seeing" - the ability to see things beyond the range of
normal vision. This is usually associated with precognition or retrocognition
(both defined below). This is referred to as "second sight" if it
has not been induced by drugs, scrying, trance or other artificial means.

DEJA-VU
The feeling that you've been someplace before when you KNOW you haven't been
there. May also apply to events rather than just places. Sometimes this can
include other information about the area, i.e., where the bathrooms are, but
sometimes it's just a nonspecific"feeling"

DIVINATION
The process of arriving at an answer to a specific question through the use
of a particular device or method, such as dowsing rids, pendulums, "throwing
the bones" or reading Tarot cards. People who use divination methods
may (generally) be referred to as "diviners" or may (generally)
referred to by their chosen divination method(s).

DREAMWALKING
Dream walking can be compared to astral projection, except you enter the
subconscious dreamworld of the sleeper. I suppose it's possible to manipulate
the sleeper's dreams, but I don't often hear of it being done. I do know it's
possible to observe, and possibly interact with, the sleeper's dreams.

EMPATH
/ EMPATHY
An empath is a person able to sense someone else's current emotional state.
An empath is NOT a vampire type, regardless of how many people believe it
to be, although there's certainly no reason a vampire could not ALSO be an
empath - after all, I am.
Source: In common usage
Empathic Projection
Being able to broadcast a particular emotion to other people. This does
not necessarily mean the person(s) will react to it, however. It just means
that you can broadcast it to them.
Other terms: puppeting (Source: Final
Fantasy 7 game, but used on a few message boards)
Empathic
Overload
Empathic overload is similar to, but much more distracting than, regular
"stress". Large crowds of people who have varying emotional states
create mental chaos for the empath sensitive enough to perceive it, especially
if they have not developed strong enough shielding to cope with it.
Telempathy
No, that's not a typo. Tele-Empathy - instead of communicating by thoughts,
this is communicating by empathic means, using emotions instead of words.
This is a more advanced or more experienced skill - it takes time to be
able to regularly AND effectively communicate in this fashion.
ENERGY
MEDITATION
A specific type of meditation designed to raise your awareness of your own
body's energy flows. Typically meditation itself involves focus and concentration
(i.e., focusing on your breathing - breath in, hold it for a moment, then
breath out, being mindful of the path your breathing takes - reciting a chant
or mantra, etc.) and mindfulness, sometimes referred to as awareness, in which
the mind observes itself without becoming distracted. Energy meditations are
a way to achieve mind/body integration and inner peace, as well as release
subconscious blocks preventing you from using your energies to their fullest
extent.

ENERGY SIGNATURE
The pattern of energy, vibes, or the feeling that is unique to each individual;
a person's psi 'fingerprint' identifiable in real life or astrally and oftentimes
left behind long after a person has gone. Vampires have a particular quality
to their energy signature, and those who can pick up on this can identify
them as vampires if they have enough experience identifying it. An energy
sig is different than a presence, though you can feel the presence of someone's
energy, as well.
Vampires and other "otherkin" have a distinctive energy signature
that is recognizable to those who know what to look for.

ESP
ESP stands for "Extra-Sensory Perception" and was in VERY common
usage during the New Age heyday of the 1970's and 1980's. I don't see it mentioned
as often since many of the talents that fell under the "generic"
ESP term then actually have proper names now, however it does still crop up.

FLIPPING
A heightened awareness of your surroundings and people near you. This can
be thought of as moving your awareness from just yourself to the area around
you, or as moving from "first person" awareness to "third person"
awareness like the views in a video game. Think of it has having eyes in the
back of your head.

GROUND
Grounding is a basic technique used in most energy or magickal work that
assists in shedding the the negative or excess energy and allows you to stabilize
your own energy levels. There are many techniques for doing so, and not all
of them are visual in nature.
Source: In common usage
Other Terms: Ground state
HYPNOSIS
/ HYPNOTISM
In reality, when a person has this ability, it is more of a mild suggestion,
a mental nudge, more than direct or absolute control. I.e., the subject can
be "influenced" to look in another direction, or possibly move right
or left, but not, for example, do weird stuff like performing the "chicken
dance" in the middle of main street or hanging upside down from a lamppost.

Other terms: See "mesmerism",
below.
IDENTIFYING
This is a specific type of scan (see "Scanning", below) for feeling/scanning
someone's energy signature or aura and comparing it to known "types"
of people - i.e., ,vampires, specific otherkin types, etc. This takes experience
- seeing other enough energy signatures of a specific type - to be able to
identify them easily.

Other terms: Energy Pattern Identification
(source: The Psion Guild), Pinging (source: common usage)
LINK
/ LINKING
A link in this case is a psi-based connection between two or more people.
This can be intentional - either from deliberate attempts to set up a link,
or two or more people in love who develop some sort of connection over time
- or unintentional.
Source: In semi-common usage
MEDIUMS
People who receive extra-sensory information by contacting the souls or spirits
of the departed. Typically the "voice" of the departed's spirit
is heard internally by the medium, who then vocalizes the message the spirit
wants passed on. Those who do this while in a trance - Edgar Cayce would be
an example - are sometimes called Trance Mediums.
Source: In common usage
Note: This is often used by scam artists,
who claim to talk to the departed, but are really making educated guesses
based on prior conversations with the victim. Anyone who's making a living
doing this is most likely a scam artist.
MESMERISM
A variant term for hypnotic suggestion - the term came from the name of the
person who first popularized it, Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer. This usually refers
to stage shows where the entertainer asks for volunteers and puts them through
a mass hypnosis session.

PHASING
- Similar to astral projection, only you do not totally leave your body
- only part of you does. You can send that part of you elsewhere so you
can be aware of the surroundings of wherever you sent that small part of
your awareness.
Source: Aneria Romana's Psi-vampire
page
- Another term for time manipulation (see below).

PRANA
This term comes from India, and is another name for life energy.
PRECOGNITION
This is a specific type of clairvoyance dealing with sensing events that
may or will happen in the future.
Source: In common usage
Postcognition / Retrocognition:
This is a type of clairvoyance involving being able to sense something
AFTER it has happened. Psychics that work with police departments most likely
utilize this skill.
PSIONIC / PSI /
PSIONICS
This is a common term to refer to psychic abilities, or the use of psychic
abilities, by people who are more involved in dealing with things of a psychic
nature. It can be used to refer to a (intangible) thing or state of being
("He is psionic" or "It's a psionic construct") or an
activity ("it's a psionic attack").
Source: Earliest known sighting of the term "Psionic" is in Theodore Sturgeon's novel "More Than Human" in 1953.
Caveat:
Some people use "psychic" to refer to "fluffy bunny new age
stuff" with crystals and tarot decks and that sort of thing, and use
"psionics" to mean a purely mental effort with no external focus
items or props.
Other terms: Psychic abilities, also
used in place of "psychic" in a description
PSYCHIC
ATTACK
Any type of unwelcome paranormal or ethereal intrusion intended to cause
harm to the recipient. Psychic vampire attacks are considered a form of psychic
attack, especially when forced upon an unwilling victim. However, vampires
aren't the only ones capable of using psychic attacks - anyone who's been
trained (or has trained themselves) can also attack someone in this manner.
There's a reason I have a link for psychic
defense on my site. :)

PSYCHIC
ENERGY
A general term for the life energy which is found within and throughout all
living things. This is typically the life-force that energy and psychic vampires
feed upon, although some will disagree. This energy is also contained in blood
and is believed by some to be an integral part of the exchange which occurs
between a donor and a blood vampire. Some blood vampires are aware of this,
some aren't and may not believe it if explained to them if they are that unfamiliar
with psychic or psionic things.

psi energy
PSYCHOMETRY
This is the ability to receive impressions or information (visual or otherwise)
from coming in contact with a physical object. The information picked up may
be simple or complex, depending on the skill of the person attempting it,
and the amount of impressions left on the object by it's owner. Something
worn or handled constantly will have stronger impressions than something that's
hardly been touched or is only handled regularly.

PYROKINESIS
The ability to manipulate fire. This does not necessarily mean you can create
fire from scratch, but rather manipulate or "influence" the effects
of existing fire. The nature of fire itself is very volatile, and is not easy
to manipulate even for experienced people.
Source: In common usage
REMOTE
VIEWING
Picking up information about a person, place or event at a location you are
not currently at, and do not currently have information about through other
scientific or technological metods. There are certain ways of doing this,
sometimes called "protocols", that attempt to ensure that it is
the remote viewing psi skill that you're getting information from, rather
than any accidental scientific means.
Source: In common usage
SCAN
/ SCANNING
Gathering information either on an individual or a group of individuals.
This can be used in a passive manner to gather general information such as
the physical condition, emotional state, an indication of whether or not the
person is otherkin, etc. Compare it to using sonar or radar when locating
things. Or, it can be used in a more active fashion (sometimes called a "deep
scan") to attempt to acquire more specific information, such as why someone
is ill. Done badly, an active scan can be painful (compare it to a rampaging
wild animal in a glassware display) so real mentors like to be sure that their
student know how NOT to do a scan. Nobody is 100% accurate all the time -
everyone has "bad days" and "good days" for doing psi-based
work.

SCRYING
Scrying is a divination method used to do things like foretelling the future
or gather information. Other examples of divination methods include tarot
decks, runes, fortunetellers using crystal balls, etc. Technically this refers
to staring at a shiny or reflective surface to see things in the future or
in the past.

SEE
/ SEEING
When used with a capital S, even in the middle of a sentence, refers to seeing
things with senses beyond the physical, to "See" what a person's
aura looks like, for example, instead of to "see" what shirt they're
wearing today.

SHIELD
/ SHIELDS
When used by psionic or psychic people in general, this refers to walls or
blockages against mental attacks or mental distractions, either deliberately
or inadvertently. These are typically used to keep one's mind/body safe, rather
than a specific location (see "wards" below) but some people use
"shields" and "wards" interchangeably.
Source: In common usage
Other terms: Shielding (typically refers
to any shields a person currently has), Wards (if used interchangeably)
TELEKINESIS
Telekinesis is the ability to move or manipulate objects with the mind. It
is not always easy to prove this is a valid ability when things are small
enough they could be moved by gravity, light breezes, or bad placement on
a table. Often, many people who make headlines with telekinetic tricks find
their results are disproved and turn out to have a mundane explanation. This
is not to say that it's impossible - just that it is often particularly hard
to prove.
Source: In common usage
TELEPATHY
The ability to communicate via thoughts. Telepathy typically implies two-way
communication, but it is possible for a person to be only a "sender"
or "receiver" via telepathy.
Source: In common usage
TIME
SHIFTING
This refers to altering the flow of time - whether this is perceivable only
to the individual(s) using the skill or not is difficult to say, however it
IS possible to alter it to a degree where a 30 minute drive only takes about
15-20 minutes, and do it WITHOUT exceeding the speed limit.
Source: In semi-common usage
WARDS
Often used to denote shields that are around a physical location, such as
a house or car, rather than a person.
Source: In common usage
WORKING
Used with a capital W, even in the middle of a sentence, it often refers
to the process of manipulating metaphysical energy, such as prana or psi energy,
or the energies raised during Wiccan coven or pagan ceremonies. In general
the term Working, capitalized, refers to actual molding or utilization of
the energy for different purposes, and so sometimes these actions do not have
verbs of their own.
