Lolandrea's PsiVamp FAQ (Excerpt)

WHAT IS A PSI-VAMPIRE?

A psi-vampire is someone who requires others' energy for whatever reason or purpose. They tend to go from surplus to deficit in terms of energy fairly quickly, become energized when surrounded by lots of people, and often find themselves more attached to energy than they are bodily sensation. There are those who can't perform nearly as well sexually--or at all, for that matter--without some energy intake/stimulus, and often get greatly frustrated as a result.

HOW DOES ONE KNOW IF THEY ARE A PSI-VAMPIRE OR NOT?

There's not really a "strict" general rule for being a psi-vampire except that you require some amount of personal energy--others' energy--besides your own. If you don't know whether or not this is so, you will have to take a close examination of your behavior towards and regarding others in other to find out.

CAN ONE SIMPLY "BECOME" A PSI-VAMPIRE, OR ARE YOU BORN ONE?

It is my belief based on personal observation that you don't simply "become" one, you are one from birth or you have the potential. If you have the potential but it has not yet "manifested," there exists the possibility that you can be "awakened" to your potential as one. Others, however, are one from birth and don't need an awakening. It doesn't matter one way or another; the factors that predetermine it are mostly based on personality and life choices as opposed to how "strong" one is, psi-vampiricly speaking. :)

HOW DOES ONE TAKE ENERGY AS A PSI-VAMPIRE??

There are several ways to approach this. Some people can live off of the energy that people "throw off," so to speak, especially in large crowds and "emotional" ones at that. Crowds are usually the best choice as an energy source, but you do have the option of draining one person only. It's not recommended, as the strain on them will be much greater as opposed to taking a tiny bit from a lot of people. It also can be harmful to them, not to mention if you try to take from the wrong person--an aware psi or mage--they can sense your attempt, and may take it as an attack.

HOW CAN I TELL IF I'M BEING DRAINED BY A PSI-VAMPIRE?

The general rule of thumb for me is this: if you have to ask, you're not. However, I realize that there could be people wandering around with genuinely no idea whatsoever. So here's what to look for: the difference will be extreme. This will not manifest as a headache or any "strict" bodily sensation. There are those who claim to be attacked every five seconds; those are the ones that either a) have a serious problem emotionally, b) are liars looking for attention or c) both. If you have had a severe energy lack for whatever reason, very suddenly, it's possible that you're being drained. I would also recommend not trying to run around diagnosing this unless you have some psi experience, or know someone who has, so you can get a second opinion. The first thing another psi should look mentally for is a link from you to someone else, off into whatever direction, from your gut (yellow chakra). That should be severed, immediately, unless you desire the connection itself. For shielding advice, take a look around my site for a page on that. If there's not one there, it will be there soon.

SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT PSI-VAMPIRE ATTACKS?

No, not unless you are (a) a practicing psi or mage who is very much in the open and doesn't know anything about shielding or (b) someone who practices any form of energy maintenance in some form or another (not necessarily psionic/psychic or magickal) and isn't very experienced.

I might want to add that shielding is cake, and learning it is easy. There's not really a good excuse to be attacked frequently, unless for whatever reason you're very run down, and someone is deliberately attacking you. Even so, with the right amount of awareness, you don't have to walk around like the walking wounded.
